FAQ: Troubleshooting Pump & Filtration System Issues

Everfilt Sand Media Filters

Pump Tripping Issues

  • Why did the pump trip out today? The pump likely tripped due to a pressure buildup in the filtration system. If the media inside the tank has become hard or formed channels, water cannot flow freely, causing a rise in pressure. This pressure can overload the system and trip the pump.

  • Why did the pump start working again after restarting? After restarting the pump and performing several backflushes, the flow may have improved temporarily, allowing the system to function again. However, if the media is degraded, the issue may reoccur.

High-Pressure Concerns

  • What causes high-pressure readings in the system? High-pressure readings are often caused by media that has hardened or formed channels, restricting water flow. This results in a buildup of pressure because water cannot enter or exit the tank fast enough.

  • What happens if the media bed is old or clogged? When the media bed becomes old or clogged, it restricts water flow, leading to pressure increases. The PD switch will initiate backwash cycles to try and clear the media. If the bed remains clogged, the system will repeatedly attempt backwashing without success.

Role of the PD Switch

  • What is the role of the PD switch in the system? The PD switch constantly monitors the pressure differential in the system. If the media is clogged or hardened, the switch will detect the increased pressure and trigger a backwash cycle.

Maintenance & Media Issues

  • Can a clogged media bed cause the pump to trip? Yes, if the media bed remains hard or blocked after multiple backwash cycles, the continuous pressure increase can cause the pump to trip or lead to other system failures.

  • How can I tell if the media needs to be replaced? Signs that the media may need a replacement include frequent high-pressure readings, repeated backwash cycles, and failure to restore proper flow even after backflushing. If the media remains hardened after these steps, it’s a clear indicator that it needs replacing.

Backwash Cycle Troubles

  • What should I do if the system keeps initiating backwash cycles? If backwash cycles are initiated repeatedly without resolving the issue, the media is likely old and malfunctioning. It would help if you considered replacing the media to prevent damage to the pump or other components.

Risks & Prevention

  • What are the potential risks of not addressing hardened media? If hardened media is not addressed, it can lead to continuous pump trips, inefficient filtration, and potential damage to other system components. This could result in costly repairs or extended system downtime.

  • How can I maintain the filtration system to prevent these issues? Regularly monitor pressure readings and ensure that backwashing is done properly. Schedule routine maintenance checks to assess the condition of the media and replace it when necessary to avoid flow restrictions and pressure issues.
